Project Overview
In the past, the Brethren in Christ Church Conference of Cuba (BIC- Cuba) felt uneasy with social outreach projects. That is until they found a venue that connected straight into the Cuban soul and social fabric. Baseball – Cuba's national sport that bridges the social, political and even religious boundaries and differences of the Cuban people facing many adversities.

Ramon Castillo – pastor of a small church in La Guarapeta – had a vision. A vision that he says came from God: throw a pitch for Jesus and you will hit a home run. He shared his vision with conference leadership, and in 2008 the conference began to pray in earnest to see if God had his hand in this. Of course Pastor Ramon had prayed about this for many years already.
In 2009 representatives from NKMB visited some BIC Cuba churches. They took along a baseball bat, a glove and a ball just because these elements were lying around in someone’s basement without being used. The ball somehow got into the hands of pastor Ramon with the words from Pastor Massanet : “This is the seed for your ministry. Keep on praying.”
This was, of course, all unknown to us at that time.
When NKMB launched “Christmas for Cuba” in 2009, we asked the conference in Cuba if there was something we could bring along for them. On their lengthy wish list was also baseball equipment. The NKMB group was able to take four complete sets of baseball equipment.
The rest is history
Today, the BIC-Cuba has just launched a nationwide Baseball championship tournament with 42 teams participating. At every game a devotional is offered, people are invited to attend local churches and make a decision for Christ. The game ends with an open prayer.
Since our visit in February 2010, more than 60 people have found Christ through this ministry. On February 13, 2011 many of the new converts will be baptized. Our second NKMB Missions trip group will be present to worship together with them and celebrate God’s goodness in Pastor Ramon’s Baseball Church.
Last year we were able to help Pastor Ramon move forward with the construction of his new church. This year we want to continue with the construction. The lover level is now complete and the second floor is planned to include classrooms, toilets and a few dormitories. The church, once finished, will become the outreach centre for the baseball ministry and also a regional retreat and training centre for the youth and the pastors of about 20 house churches.
In addition to supporting the further construction of the church, our group plans to take along 14 complete sets of baseball equipment in order to take this ministry to the next level and reach even more of the Cuban society with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Only 14 ambassadors of NKMB will be able to go to Cuba in February 2011, but we can all get in on the game. Your donations are needed to make this project a home run for Christ in Cuba.
